Hello Friends,

My name is Scott Sonnon, and I'll be your Coach as you build "POWER-FORMANCE" with my kettlebell program. The name Powerformance refers to the unique aspect of: repeatable performance with power, with technique. I will be giving you a taste of this "poweformance" phenomenon, not because of the magic of a "canonball with a handle" creating inhuman power, but becuase of the unusual focus on powerful technique.

For those of you that don't know me, I was the first Westerner licensed to teach the "Russian System of Training" in Russia, the first foreigner to be licensed in Russia to teach members of the Russian Spetsnaz in their System of Training. My time in Russia taught me several important things about kettlebell training. The most important piece of advice I received is that the kettlebell is a fantastic weapon in your arsenal, but it is just a tool. When you understand the tool, it can serve as many functions as you need.

Like variations in fighting styles, every unit and team traininer in the former USSR had different kettlebell techniques. Some were sloppy, many were incredible. None were stagnant. They continued to conduct research which pointed to the use of many different equally valid mechanics. Only outside of Russia do we see arguments about who has "best" techique. The greatest coaches I had in Russia advised me to master the basics, study the underlying mechanics, absorb what was useful, and then adapt it to the needs of my students.

Already a champion when I arrived, I discovered a paradigm shift from the incredible work ethic of my USA coaches, in the pragmatic approach of the inefficiencies of training without focus on technique. Together, my American and Russian coaches form a more powerful approach than their individual methods do individually. Only this integrated approach allowed me to return and win world games after losing to the Russians seventeen years prior.

My advice remains the same when it comes to training with kettlebells: do not seek common rule structures. Periodize your training to provide you with annually rotated series of rule structures. All technique variations with PROPER FORM are just tools in the toolbox. I use what's most effective to my task and leave the rest. But this does not mean that I simply made up my methods out of thin air.

The movements contained in my programs were based upon drills that I learned in Russia, but applied with my American ingenuity. I taught those original Russian drills but later modified them to become resistance exercises with kettlebells, which I then started teaching to various combat teams around the world. The movements I teach have been tested, and they've proven themselves again and again both in and on the field. You will see these innovative applications to time-tested principles in my other kettlebell courses.
